    Shallon –

I’m watching the most recent ep of Downtown Girls about losing friendships when girlfriends get married. As a married woman who married before most of my friends, I’d like to offer a bit of advice: Stick with her. A lot of people immerse themselves when they make a big change. For example, newly married friends may suddenly make tons of annoying, married-people-only plans. If you’re a great friend, keep calling, because once the new life is more comfortable, she’ll miss you! (And re-read this when your friends start having children – it’s true times a hundred. And if you have children first, don’t stop calling your child-free friends! And don’t talk about your baby the whole time when you go out with them! But if the story about your child is funny and involves some self-deprecation, like you admitting you are obsessed with your child, it’s probably ok. But I digress.)

Love the show – thanks for doing it!

I was amazed how easy it is to relate to you. All these other reality shows you know that you could never be like them, they seem so fake. But when I watch Downtown Girls I feel like I’m meeting new friends and getting advise that will apply to my life too. I’m a writer as well and I always thought pursuing it would be a lost cause. But something about the way you do it makes me think I still can. Thanks so much for being inspiring and not even trying.

Don’t EVER think that you can’t/shouldn’t pursue your writing dreams! The easiest way is to start writing a blog, invite all your friends to read it and post something 3x a week, then work up to everyday. It gives you the chance to experiment with writing style. Then if you find some mag or website you want to write for, you can show them your blog as a portfolio and work your way up from there! Good luck!

You are so awesome. You’re basically that girl that lives in my head 24-7. If you’re ever in Toronto, we need to go for a drink :) lol

Hey,I’m an aspiring writer from South Texas, looking for a forum to get a bit of exposure. I would love to collaborate with fun people like you. Please e-mail if interested.
P.S. the show is so FUN!!!!!

Hi Shallon! First of all I’d like to say that you have truly inspired me to be a writer:) I have always enjoyed it, but had my mind set on being a chef haha… I’m still young (16 and a half!) so I decided to look around and see what else I might like, and that happened to be writing! Then after seeing Downtown Girls, it really made me feel like it is possible! You are my new role model and because of you, I decided to join the journalism class at my high school and start a blog with my friend. And I am also looking forward to reading Hot Mess:)

    • shallon says:

Yay that’s awesome! It’s never too early to get started, and you’re already 1,000 steps ahead of everyone because you know what you want! Starting a blog is my number one piece of advice to aspiring writers so keep it up and don’t be afraid to experiment with different writing styles. Good luck!

    • Ariana Tobe says:

Thank you! :) Oh and also, what did you study in college to get where you are now?

  11. Sarah Smile says:

I heart your blog. It’s so witty, quirky and fun. And I love how you poke fun and don’t take yourself too seriously. Bravo, lady!

  12. Patrick says:

I’m just writing to say (again) I’m impressed at how well you follow through with your ambitions. Whether it’s book deals or reality series or whatever, you don’t back down–heck, if you woke up tomorrow and announced you wanted to play for the Redwings, I figure you could find a way to make that work. Plus, judging from the reactions of some of your other fans, you encourage other people to want to follow their dreams too. I, for one, wouldn’t mind if more people took this approach to life.

  13. Ariana Tobe says:

I just finished reading Hot Mess and I love love loved it! The funny thing was that everything Emma and Rachel do remind me exactly of my best friend Morgan and I (right down to the things they say!) When will your next book come out?

    • shallon says:

Thank you SO MUCH!! I’m so glad you liked it! I’m wrapping up “Exes and Ohs” right now and it’ll hit shelves spring 2011! I’m shooting the cover soon, eeee!

I love this show and I havent even finished watching season 1 yet. Everytime I try to sit down and get through it someone comes into the room and asks me to do something. Now I think im suffering from Downtown Girls withdrawl side effects include: Aggression, Annoyance, Insomnia.

Im only scared of whats gonna happen when I finish season 1 and get onto season 2.

Hi Shallon, you ‘re such an inspiration to someone interested in getting their career going in writing. I am a great writer and would love to work for a magazine as a freelancer, but am not sure where to get started. I have submitted a few pitch ideas to some NYC magazines, but haven’t received feedback yet. If you have any advice I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
